The Mystery of The Trinity

Hi everyone.

Hope we had a great day and hope we learnt a thing or two from last week’s post .

Last week we looked at some of the misconceptions about the Holy spirit. And we were also made to understand that we can’t ask God to fill us with the Holy spirit because he is not moisture or liquid but rather we could ask that God should give us the Holy ghost.

But before we explain the ‘ indwelling and Infilling of the Holy ghost’, there is a topic we absolutely must first understand, and that is:

‘The Mystery of the Trinity’

Firstly we need to understand that; The Holy ghost is God.

The Holy ghost is not more than God. The Holy ghost is not lesser than God.

‘Trinity’ is one of the most widely misconstrued word in the church today.

Trinity does not mean three different Gods, but rather it gives us three different role God played in the redemption of man.

In redemption, God became a father; He became a son for the redemption of man; and He became the spirit for the salvation of man.

You might ask: Why then does the bible say ‘ Jesus is sitted at the right hand of the father?’

Well, today again we will see that ‘the right hand of the father’ does not always mean ‘the right hand of the father’ every time it is seen in the bible.

In Genesis 49:3 KJV

Reuben, thou art my firstborn, my might, and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity, and the excellency of power:

Did this mean Reuben was his father’s strength? No. it was a figurative expression.

Some times you might see ‘the son of my right hand’, it doesn’t mean the child always stays at his father’s right hand but rather it means ‘The Child is the one The Father has given authority to rule’.

So, whenever the bible says Jesus sat down at the right hand of God, it does not mean Jesus was lesser than God; it simply means Jesus now has all authority because when he came to the earth, he relinquished all of his authority.

Therefore, it is normal for him upon resurrection to receive all of his authority back and that is what is being referred to as ‘ The right hand of God’.

Because if we conclude that Jesus is ‘sitted at the right hand of God’ then we are simply saying the Holy ghost is ‘sitted at the left’ which is absolutely wrong because ‘the left hand’ is always used for condemnation and rejection.

Remember the parable, where Jesus said the goats will go to the left and the sheep to the right (that left signifies condemnation).

In Genesis 48

When Jacob wanted to bless Ephraim and Manasseh.

Vs 17 KJV

And when Joseph saw that his father laid his right hand upon the head of Ephraim, it displeased him: and he held up his father’s hand, to remove it from Ephraim’s head unto Manasseh’s head.

Joseph was displeased that Jacob placed his left hand on the eldest son’s head. This shows that it means something.

So if we say the Holy ghost is at the left hand, we are saying he is the condemned/ rejected of God. Which is not true.

The word ‘Trinity’ simply explains the different roles God played in the redemption of man.

He became a Father for man. He became a son so that he can be made a sacrifice for man, and he became a spirit so that he can be the salvation of man.

We have just one God.

The Holy spirit is God. Not a servant of God. Not lesser than God.

He is God by himself and in himself.

John 4:24 KJV

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

Here, Jesus affirms that God is a spirit.

2 Cor. 3:17 KJV

Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.

Wherever we see the word ‘The spirit of the Lord’ in the bible; it is referring to God.

God is a spirit and cannot have another spirit. If a spirit will have anything, it will be a soul and a body.

Satan is a spirit and he does not have more than one spirit.

Lying spirit, seductive spirit, anger spirit, fornicating spirit are not different types of spirit; they are simply the activities of the devil on earth.

Also, the Holy spirit is not separated into parts like; the spirit of love, the spirit of forgiveness etc. but rather it is the Holy spirit performing all of these functions.

God cannot have more than one spirit and that is same for man (and even the devil). There are only two kinds of spirit; It is either the spirit of God or an evil spirit.

This is why when the Holy spirit came to live in man He became one with our spirit man, and it is impossible for man to have two spirits.

In Isaiah 11:2 KJV

And the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord ;

The spirit of the lord here refers to the lord himself.

Some people believe God has seven spirits but these are just functions of the Holy spirit. They are not different spirit types.

When God was a father, he was existing as the spirit; but he had to become a man to die for the sins of the world and then he went back to become a spirit.

Becoming a son:

The concept of ‘The Son of God’ is simply ‘Jesus becoming man’.

God who became flesh.

So, either as father or son, he is still the same spirit. The concept of trinity does not separate God.

When you feel the presence of the Holy spirit, you are feeling the presence of God. When you work in the power of the Holy spirit. You are working in the power of God

The word ‘ The Holy Spirit’ Jesus made was to let us know that redemption and salvation is possible.

The word ‘ Holy Spirit’ is a redemptive word.
God has always been a spirit and the word ‘Holy spirit’ is redemptive because if I tell you ‘The Holy Spirit’ will come and live in you then you will know that once that spirit comes, you will be holy.

It is a new covenant word. It is rare or nearly impossible in the old testament to see ‘The Holy Spirit’ called ‘Holy Spirit’.

Ezekiel 37:14 KJV

And shall put my spirit in you, and ye shall live, and I shall place you in your own land: then shall ye know that I the Lord have spoken it, and performed it, saith the Lord.

‘My spirit’ here is instead of ‘The Holy Spirit’.

God in the old testament always talks about His spirit which is Him.

Joel 2:28-29 KJV

[28] And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

[29] And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

God referred to the Holy spirit as His spirit. Jesus referred to the Holy spirit as Holy spirit because the work of the Holy spirit is to make man holy.

Let’s see how God promised the Holy spirit in the old covenant/testament.

Ezek 37:26-27 KJV

[26] Moreover I will make a covenant of peace with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them: and I will place them, and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in the midst of them for evermore.

[27] My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

He will set his place in us. He will will Live in us.

This verse is also the same with

John 14:16 KJV

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

The indwelling of the spirit in man is the Indwelling of God.

Ephesians 4:4 KJV

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling;

The Holy ghost is simply ‘God in Man’.

God – God not in Man

Jesus – God as Man.

If we understand that the Holy ghost does not decrease and that he doesn’t dwell in bottles, oil, handkerchiefs, fire etc. Then a lot of us will be saved from spiritual insecurities.

The Holy ghost is God and we must relate with him like that.

By Next week, we will now go into the explanation of the ‘Infilling and the Indwelling of the Holy spirit’.

Stay tuned for the next blog post.
