One of the smartest things you can do as a budget traveler is stop thinking about trips one country at a time. Most people fly into a country, spend their time there, and fly back home. What they don’t realize is that in many parts of the world, two or three countries sit so close together that visiting just one is actually leaving money and experiences on the table.
That is the idea behind country pairing. You fly into a region once, move between nearby countries while you are already there, and fly home once. Same budget. More countries. Better value.
This article is the practical guide. I have put together real country combinations that work well together across West Africa, East Africa, Southeast Asia, and Europe. For each pairing, I will walk you through the route, how to move between the countries, and what to keep in mind before you book. I have organised it by region, so you can jump straight to where you are planning to go
Pick your region and let’s get into it.
New to country pairing? Before you read, I have a full article that breaks down exactly how country pairing works, including the money math, what to watch out for, and how to find cheap connecting flights. Read it here.
Africa

Africa is one of the best continents for country pairing, and it is still one of the most underrated. The continent has 54 countries, many of which share borders, have overlapping visa policies, and are connected by road or short, affordable flights. Once you land in any major African city, you are often closer to two or three other countries than you think.
Here are the pairings worth knowing about.
West Africa
Benin, Togo, and Ghana
This is one of my favourite pairings and the one I have done personally. These three countries sit side by side along the coast, and you can move between all of them by road. The borders are straightforward, the bus and shared taxi options are affordable, and each country offers a completely different experience despite being so close together.
Take a bus to Cotonou in Benin, make your way through Lomé in Togo, and end in Accra in Ghana. You can fly home from Accra or take a bus back (less than 24 hours if you do), which makes the route clean from start to finish.
Senegal and Gambia
Gambia is literally surrounded by Senegal, which makes this one of the easiest pairings on the continent. Fly into Dakar, spend a few days, then cross into Banjul by road. Gambia is small enough to explore in two to three days before heading back into Senegal to fly home. Budget travelers love this pairing because both countries are affordable, and the contrast between them is surprisingly rich.
Ghana and Ivory Coast
If you are already in Ghana, Ivory Coast is right next door. Abidjan is a vibrant city with great food, a buzzing nightlife scene, and a very different French-influenced culture from Accra. You can cross by road or take a short flight. A great add-on for anyone already planning a West Africa trip.
Want to take it up a notch? Visit six West African countries on one trip.
If you are feeling ambitious, there is a route that takes you through six West African countries on a single trip. Starting from Nigeria, you can move through Benin, Togo, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and all the way to Senegal entirely by road. The countries sit in a neat coastal corridor, and each border crossing flows into the next.
It is one of the most rewarding overland routes on the continent. If you are feeling excited about this one and would love to try it, check out this guide.
East Africa
Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda
This is the East Africa pairing I did myself, and it is one of the most rewarding trips I have taken. Fly into Nairobi, cross into Entebbe in Uganda, then make your way to Kigali in Rwanda, or you can do it as I did mine. Short budget flights connect all three cities, and the visa situation is relatively friendly for African passports.
Each country brings something different to the trip. Kenya for wildlife and coastal energy. Uganda for gorilla trekking and the source of the Nile. Rwanda for its extraordinary cleanliness, safety, and the powerful history of the genocide memorial. Three very different experiences, one long-haul flight.
Tanzania as an extension
If you have more time, Tanzania pairs beautifully with Kenya. Fly into Nairobi, spend a few days, then cross into Dar es Salaam or head straight to Zanzibar for a beach finish. The Kenya-Tanzania border crossing at Namanga is one of the most straightforward overland crossings in East Africa. You can also do same with Seychelles or just plan to visit – Rwanda – Uganda – Kenya – Tanzania – (By flight) Seychelles, then a flight home.
Southern Africa
South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini
This pairing is perfect for anyone flying into Johannesburg. Both Lesotho and Eswatini are small landlocked kingdoms completely surrounded by South Africa, which means you can visit either or both without ever taking another long-haul flight. Cross by road, spend a day or two in each, and you have technically visited three countries on one trip. Lesotho is stunning for its mountain scenery, and Eswatini for its culture and wildlife reserves.
Zimbabwe and Zambia
Victoria Falls sits right on the border between these two countries, which makes this pairing almost too easy. Fly into Harare or Livingstone, visit the falls from both sides, and you have done two countries in one trip. Budget travelers can cross between them on a day visa, and the experience on each side of the falls is genuinely different. You can also add Botswana to the group. Winks.

North Africa
Morocco and Egypt
These two are the most visited countries in North Africa, and both have strong international flight connections, which means you can often find affordable long-haul tickets into either. They do not share a border, so you would need a connecting flight between them, but both countries are so rich in history, food, and culture that pairing them on one trip makes sense if you have two weeks or more.
Morocco, with a side trip to Gibraltar or the Canary Islands
If you are already in Morocco, Gibraltar is accessible by ferry from Tarifa in Spain, and the Canary Islands have direct flights from Casablanca. These are not strictly African destinations, but they sit so close to the continent that they are worth mentioning as easy add-ons for anyone already in the region.
Asia

Asia is one of the most budget-friendly continents to travel once you land, and it is also one of the easiest for country pairing. Flights within the continent are affordable, overland routes are well established, and in some regions you can move between countries for almost nothing.
Southeast Asia
Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam
This is one of the most popular country pairings in the world and for good reason. The three countries sit close together, budget airlines and buses connect them easily, and your money goes very far once you are on the ground.
Fly into Bangkok, spend a few days exploring the city and temples, then make your way to Siem Reap in Cambodia to see Angkor Wat. From there, cross into Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and work your way north through the country before flying home. The whole route flows naturally and each country feels completely different from the last.
Singapore and Malaysia
These two are almost impossible to separate. Singapore is one of the most connected cities in the world, which means you can often find affordable long-haul flights in. From there, Malaysia is just across the causeway. Kuala Lumpur is about five hours by bus from Singapore, and the contrast between the two cities is striking. Singapore is polished, expensive, and incredibly efficient. Kuala Lumpur is chaotic, affordable, and full of food you will not stop thinking about.
One important thing to note for Nigerian passport holders: you cannot enter Malaysia by road from Singapore. You will need to fly. It is still a short and cheap flight, but factor that into your planning.
Another sweet spot is
Singapore → Bali (Indonesia) → Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)
East Asia: South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong
If you have been following along since the first article, you already know this pairing from the money math example. These three destinations sit close enough in East Asia that moving between them on budget airlines is very affordable compared to flying back to Nigeria and out again.
Fly into Seoul, explore for a few days, then take a short flight to Tokyo. From Japan, Hong Kong is another quick hop. Each city is a completely different world, and the food alone is worth the trip. This is a higher budget pairing compared to Southeast Asia once you factor in accommodation and daily costs, but the flight savings still make the country pairing logic worth applying.
Europe

Europe might not be the first continent that comes to mind for budget country pairing, but it is actually one of the easiest. Many European countries share open borders, which means once you land, you can cross into neighboring countries without going through immigration again. Bus and train connections between cities are frequent, affordable, and sometimes overnight, so you save on accommodation too.
The Balkans
Albania, Montenegro, and North Macedonia
The Balkans is one of the best kept secrets for budget travelers and it is still under the radar enough that you will not be fighting crowds everywhere you go. Fly into Tirana in Albania, which has become much more connected in recent years with affordable long-haul connections through European hubs. From Tirana, Montenegro is about three hours by bus. North Macedonia is another five hours from Podgorica.
Each country is affordable, visually stunning, and has a history that most people know very little about. Your daily costs will be significantly lower than Western Europe and the experience is just as rich if not more so.
Portugal and Spain
If Western Europe is on your list, Portugal and Spain are the classic pairing. Fly into Lisbon, spend a few days, then take a short train or bus to Seville or Madrid. Both countries are expensive compared to the Balkans, but Portugal is one of the more affordable Western European destinations and pairing it with Spain means one long-haul flight covers two of Europe’s most visited countries.
Czech Republic, Austria, and Hungary
Prague, Vienna, and Budapest is one of the most popular European routes and it works perfectly as a country pairing. All three cities are connected by direct trains that take between two and three hours. Fly into Prague, take the train to Vienna, then continue to Budapest and fly home. Three capital cities, three completely different cultures, one long-haul flight.
France and its neighbors
France is one of the most visited countries in the world and it sits right next to some of Europe’s most exciting destinations. If you are already making the trip, it makes no sense to go back home without seeing at least one more country.
Paris to Amsterdam is about three and a half hours by train. Paris to Brussels is under two hours. Paris to Barcelona is about six hours by high-speed train. Switzerland is also within easy reach, with Geneva just three hours from Paris by train.
For a shorter trip, France and Belgium are one of the cleanest pairings in Europe. Brussels is close, affordable compared to Paris, and has a completely different energy. For a longer trip, France, Switzerland, and Italy is a classic route that covers three very different cultures across two weeks.
I recently visited France, and I know exactly what the visa process looks like for Nigerian passport holders. If you need help getting your Schengen visa sorted, I handle the entire application process for you. Let’s Talk!

Start Planning Bigger
The countries in this guide are just a starting point. There are hundreds of pairings across the world that make sense for budget travelers, and the more you travel, the more you start to see them naturally.
The key thing to remember is this: once you have paid for that long-haul flight, you are already in the region. Moving between nearby countries from there is almost always cheaper than people expect. A bus ticket. A short flight. A border crossing. That is often all that stands between one country and three.
Pick the region that excites you most, map out your route, and start looking at flights. You will be surprised how far your money can actually take you.
And if you want help putting it all together, whether it is sorting your visa, planning your route, or figuring out the logistics from start to finish, I am here for that too.
