About Book

Ada has always been unusual. As an infant in southern Nigeria, she is a source of deep concern to her family. Her parents successfully prayed her into existence, but something must have gone awry, as the young Ada becomes a troubled child, prone to violent fits of anger and grief. But Ada turns out to be more than just volatile. Born “with one foot on the other side,” she begins to develop separate selves. When Ada travels to America for college, a traumatic event crystallizes the selves into something more powerful. As Ada fades into the background of her own mind and these alters—now protective, now hedonistic—move into control, Ada’s life spirals in a dangerous direction.

Written with stylistic brilliance and based in the author’s realities, this raw and extraordinary debut explores the metaphysics of identity and being, plunging the reader intothe mysteries of self. Unsettling, heart-wrenching, dark, and powerful, Freshwater dazzles with ferocious energy and serpentine grace, heralding the arrival of a fierce new literary voice.

Book Review

“The first madness was that we were born, that they stuffed a god into a bag of skin.”

This book kept me on my toes through the chapters, I rushed through the interesting chapters, just so I could know what befell Ada, the main character in the story.
There was so much going on for Ada in this book, just imagine, being controlled by spirit beings that you never even knew existed, beings that materialise bit by bit after every turning point in your life. That was how it was for Ada.
I hated seeing the pain she went through, all because there was something strange tied to her birth, all because she was bonded with a spirit being who will not let her be.
Ada went through a lot depression, confusion, therapies, just to understand herself and get who she really was, not until a greater spirit expounded in her. Asughara, the spirit being, that sent Ada to the back and took the front stage of her life. Asughara became the chaperone of Ada’s life and turned Ada to an heartbreaking whore who had no control over who she was.
This is a book that expanciates and broadens the mind on what happens when one is depressed, the suicide attempts, the wrist slitting, and also what falling into the hands of bad friends can cause.
You will also meet Saint Vincent, another part of Ada that you never expected to find. This deep novel speaks volume on what goes on in the mind, as you will read about how Ada was controlled by all of these beings, how she didn’t know who she was, there were only few chapters were the story was said in Ada’s point of view.
You will be curious towards the end of the book with questions plaguing your mind, as to, what will befall Ada in the end? Will she survive all of this? Will this beings control her till she dies? Where is she supposed to turn to?
And this book will give you answers that will shock you.
