If you’ve been asked to get an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test for a visa application, the process can feel confusing at first, especially when you also see terms like NDLEA clearance and visa clearance being used alongside it.
They are connected, but they are not the same thing.
I recently went through the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test process myself while preparing my visa documents, so in this guide, I’ll explain how to apply, how much it costs, what to take with you, what happens at the appointment, and how you get your result.
If you’re also trying to sort out the rest of your visa paperwork, you can start with my full travel documents checklist for Nigerians, if not, let’s get straight into it.

What Is the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test?
The NDLEA Drug Integrity Test is a drug screening carried out through the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
For visa-related applications, it is used to check for the presence of hard drugs or certain controlled substances before the applicant can move on to the NDLEA Visa Clearance stage.
The test itself is separate from the full visa clearance process. So if you have been asked to get NDLEA Visa Clearance, the drug test is only one part of it, not the final clearance document.

For the test, you’ll provide a urine sample at an approved testing centre, and your result is then uploaded to your NDLEA dashboard.
Why Do Nigerians Need This Test
When I went for my test, this was the question in the heart of many Nigerians there. Some wondered if it was a requirement by the countries or a requirement from Nigeria; others wondered why we needed to go through this stressful process for a common visit visa.
And I understand their frustration. While I don’t have all the answers, this is my own theory of the situation.
Nigerians need to take the NDLEA Drug Integrity test, especially when they visit source countries (countries where hard drugs are commonly sold and distributed).
This test will show the officials that you do not intend to dabble in drug trafficking or intake when you visit those countries. These would also certify them that you will not try to smuggle drugs into Nigeria when you get there.
If you’re wondering, “I don’t do hard drugs, what is my business with all of this?”
Well, some people do hard drugs. And those bad eggs have affected the rest of us, so we don’t have a choice for now, until the NDLEA decides it is no longer an option for Nigerians to undergo before they are given a visa.
This is also a call to order for all of us. When we visit these countries, let’s be on our best behavior so that, with time, we no longer have to go through screenings such as this.
Who Needs an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test?
Not every Nigerian traveller needs to take an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test.
You may need one if it is part of your visa clearance requirements, or if the NDLEA requires it for the category you are applying under. This can include travellers, students, prospective employees, public servants, and other applicants.
For visa applicants, the most important thing is to check whether your destination or visa process specifically requires NDLEA clearance. If it does, the Drug Integrity Test is usually part of that process.
So before applying, confirm the exact requirement for your visa. You do not need to put yourself through the process simply because someone else travelling to a different country had to do it.
Some of the countries commonly associated with NDLEA visa clearance requirements for Nigerians include:
- Thailand (This one is a strong yes, as at the time I’m writing this)
- Malaysia (maybe, but no, if you have travel history)
- Indonesia (not really)
- India
- Brazil
- Pakistan
- the Philippines (not really)
- Russia
- Kenya (if you’re going for studies and it is required)
Requirements can change, so don’t assume you need the test simply because you’re travelling abroad. Check the current visa requirements for your destination first. Some of the countries on this list may or may not need it depending on your reason for going there. Always check official sources.
Before Applying for the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test
Before you start the application, have the basic details and documents you’ll need ready so you don’t have to stop halfway through.
For travellers, the main requirement listed by the NDLEA is your National Identification Number (NIN).
You should also have:
- An active email address
- A working phone number
- Your personal details as they appear on your official documents
- A valid means of payment for the application fee
- Access to a printer or somewhere you can print your application summary after booking
If you are taking the test as part of an NDLEA Visa Clearance application, keep your other visa clearance documents separate for now. The Drug Integrity Test application itself is much simpler.
It also helps to know which state or test centre you want to use before you begin, since you’ll be asked to choose a location and appointment date during the application. I will show you where to pick this in the how-to-apply section.

How Much Does the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test Cost?
As of 2026, the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test costs ₦7500, but with fees, I paid a total of ₦7661.25. Some people paid ₦7,688, so just prepare ₦7700 when you apply through the official portal.
You’ll make the payment during the online application process before you can choose your test location and appointment date.
Keep your payment confirmation after paying, especially until your appointment is completed and your result is available on the portal.
Fees can change, so I recommend checking the amount shown on the official NDLEA portal before making payment.
How to Apply for the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test Online
The application is done online through the official NDLEA portal, and the process is fairly straightforward once you know what to expect.
Step 1: Create an Account
Go to the NDLEA portal and create an account using your email address, phone number, and a password.
You’ll need to verify your email before you can continue with the application.
Step 2: Start a Drug Integrity Test Application
Once you’re logged in, select the option to apply for a Drug Integrity Test and fill in your personal details carefully.

Make sure the information you enter matches your official documents, especially your name and NIN.
Ignore Visa Clearance for now, because you can’t go to that stage unless you’ve completed the drug test.
Step 3: Make Payment
After completing the first part of the application, you’ll be prompted to pay the Drug Integrity Test fee.
Keep your payment confirmation after paying.
Step 4: Enter Your NIN and Choose a Test Centre
You’ll then provide your NIN and select the state and test centre where you want to take the test. You can choose the NDLEA office on Ikoyi Shaw Road, where I did my own (and got it the same day), or choose the Gbagada NDLEA office too (the officer at Shaw Road said we could have done the drug test there too, but you can’t do the visa clearance anywhere other than Ikoyi for Lagos residents).
In my case, I chose State Command.
Address: 4 Shaw Road, Onilegbale Rd, Ikoyi, Lagos
Available appointment dates should appear based on the centre you choose.
Step 5: Book Your Appointment
Choose a date that works for you and confirm the appointment.
Once your booking is complete, download or print your application summary slip. You’ll need this when you go for the test.
Don’t forget to start your police clearance application processing even before you go for your drug test. I went for my police clearance biometrics right after my drug test. Read it all about it here →
What to Take to Your NDLEA Drug Test Appointment
On the day of your appointment, take the documents you used for the application and anything the portal specifically asks you to bring.
I recommend going with:
- Your printed application summary slip (the one you got after choosing appointment time and date)
- Your NIN slip or a copy showing your NIN
I’d also advise arriving a little earlier than your appointment time, especially if you’re using a busy NDLEA centre.
Your exact experience may vary by location, but having these documents with you can save you from unnecessary delays if anything needs to be checked again.
What Happens at the NDLEA Drug Test Appointment?
In my experience, we were attended to very late; we waited about 2 hours before the Dr. came, but I hope it’s different for you. Just keep that in mind anyway.
Ensure to drink water on your way, so your bowels are ready by the time you get there.
On getting there, you will sign in at the reception, and your phones will be collected. I gave mine to my husband because they don’t allow applicants to bring their phones with them to the office.
When it’s time for the test, you will be given a cup to pee in, then it will be tested. If everything checks out, after a few minutes, you will be directed to the Dr’s office to submit your NIN slip and a copy of your application summary slip.
After submission, your picture will be taken, and your fingerprint will be captured. That is it!
How to Get Your NDLEA Drug Test Result
The actual testing process is quite quick, but the total time you spend at the centre will depend on how many people are there and how the centre handles appointments.
Give it a few minutes to hours, and your drug integrity test certificate will be available for download on your NDLEA dashboard.
Click on Dashboard and you will see the message displayed for you to download it, and you’re all set. The drug test is valid for 1 year.

What Comes After the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test?
If you took the Drug Integrity Test as part of your NDLEA Visa Clearance process, the next step is to complete your visa clearance application.
That process requires additional documents and is more tedious than the drug test itself, especially around guarantor, sponsor, and supporting-document requirements.
I’ve broken that process down separately here:
Frequently Asked Questions About the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test
Can I take the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test in any state in Nigeria?
You can choose your preferred state during the online application, but your actual options depend on the centres currently available on the NDLEA portal. These may include a state command, NDLEA headquarters, or an accredited private laboratory. So it’s best to check the portal for available centres before making plans.
Is the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test the same as NDLEA Visa Clearance?
No. The Drug Integrity Test is one part of the process, while NDLEA Visa Clearance involves additional documents and background checks.
If you need NDLEA Visa Clearance, you must first complete the Drug Integrity Test, but passing the test does not automatically mean you have received your visa clearance.
Do I need an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test for Thailand?
Yes, you need an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test certificate for your Thailand visa. However, always double-check the latest Thailand visa requirements before applying, as visa rules can change.
Do I need an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test for Malaysia?
Malaysia has also been listed by NDLEA as one of the countries participating in its visa clearance scheme. If your Malaysia visa application requires NDLEA Visa Clearance, you will need to take the Drug Integrity Test first. But most times, people who already have travel history don’t need the visa clearance for their Malaysia visa. Again, check the current requirements for your specific visa category before starting the process.
How long is the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test result valid?
Current NDLEA Drug Integrity Test certificates show a validity period of one year. For example, a certificate issued on January 27, 2026, shows validity until January 27, 2027.
Still, if you are using the certificate for a visa application, check whether the embassy or visa authority has its own rule about how recently the test must have been completed.
What happens if the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test is positive?
NDLEA describes the Drug Integrity Test as a preventive measure rather than simply a punitive one. The agency says its rehabilitation and counselling centres are available for people who test positive so they can receive support and intervention.
If you are taking the test for visa clearance, a positive result may also affect your ability to proceed with that clearance, so you should contact NDLEA directly for guidance on your specific case.
Can someone else apply or book the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test for me?
The application is tied to your personal details, including your NIN, email address, phone number, and NDLEA account. Yes, someone can apply and book the test for you, but you will need to appear personally at the selected centre for the urine sample.
No one should promise to give you a certificate if you didn’t do the test; that is illegal and a scam. But someone can guide you and fill out the online application process for you. If you need help with that, reach out to me for a smooth application process.
Do I need to fast before the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test?
NDLEA’s published Drug Integrity Test instructions do not currently state that applicants need to fast before the test. The test uses a urine sample rather than a blood sample.
Unless NDLEA or your selected test centre gives you different instructions, there is no official fasting requirement listed.
Can I eat or drink before the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test?
NDLEA does not currently publish any restrictions on eating or drinking before the test. Since the test uses a urine sample, you can generally eat normally unless your test centre gives you specific instructions.
Need Help With Your Visa Application?
If you’re preparing for a visa application and you’re unsure about your NDLEA documents, police clearance, supporting documents, or the application itself, I offer visa consultation services for Nigerian travellers.
I can help you understand what your destination requires, review your documents, and guide you through the process so you know what to prepare and what to expect.
Final Thoughts
The NDLEA Drug Integrity Test itself is fairly straightforward once you know where to apply, what to take with you, and what happens at the appointment.
If you’re taking the test as part of your NDLEA Visa Clearance process, that’s the next step to focus on.
