Getting an NDLEA Visa Clearance has a reputation for being one of the most stressful and tedious parts of a visa application. It is also one of the reasons some Nigerians shy away from applying for a Thailand visa, since it is a part of the requirements.

But is it really that hard? Yes and no.

I recently went through the process myself, so in this guide, I’ll show you what you need, how the application works, what to expect at each stage, and the parts that can easily confuse first-time applicants.

One important thing to note is that you need to complete the NDLEA Drug Integrity Test before moving on to Visa Clearance. If you haven’t done that yet, start with my guide on how to get an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test in Nigeria.

What Is NDLEA Visa Clearance?

NDLEA Visa Clearance is an additional screening and clearance process for Nigerians travelling to certain countries that might be known as a source or transit country for hard drugs.

Unlike the Drug Integrity Test, the Visa Clearance stage involves more than testing. You’ll need to submit supporting documents, provide guarantor details, and go through an interview before the clearance is issued.

NDLEA also makes it clear that getting the clearance does not guarantee that your visa will be approved; it is simply one of the requirements for the visa application.

The current process is now handled online through the NDLEA portal, although you will still need to attend an appointment as part of the process.

What You Need Before Applying for NDLEA Visa Clearance

Before you start the Visa Clearance application, gather your documents first. This is the part of the process that can take the most time, especially if you still need to sort out your state of origin certificate, sponsor documents, or guarantors.

The exact documents can vary depending on your travel category, but for a tourism application, you should prepare the following.

NDLEA Visa Clearance required documents
NDLEA Visa Clearance required documents

Personal Documents

You’ll need your own identification and travel documents, including:

  • Your completed NDLEA Drug Integrity Test
  • International passport
  • Passport pages 1–6 in PDF format
  • NIN slip
  • State of origin certificate
  • A typed and signed application letter requesting NDLEA Visa Clearance

I’d recommend preparing clear scans of everything before you start the online application so you’re not trying to resize, scan, or find documents halfway through.

Sponsor Documents

If someone is sponsoring your trip, you’ll also need documents from your sponsor.

These may include:

  • Sponsor’s valid ID
  • Passport photograph
  • Work ID or other proof of occupation
  • Bank statement
  • Tax clearance, where applicable

If you are paying for the trip yourself. We’ll cover self-sponsorship separately below because this is one of the areas that can confuse applicants.

Guarantor Documents

You’ll also need guarantors for the Visa Clearance process.

Each guarantor may be required to provide documents such as:

  • Valid means of identification
  • Letter of commitment
  • Work ID or proof of employment
  • Employment letter or contract, where applicable
  • Professional qualification or business registration documents, depending on their occupation

Your guarantors cannot be your spouse or immediate family members such as your parents or siblings. NDLEA also states that guarantors must reside in the same state as the applicant.

This is one of the parts I found most stressful before applying, so I’ll explain exactly who can act as a guarantor, what they need to provide, and whether they need to come with you in the next section. Your guarantor must also sign physically with a pen, not digitally, so choose someone who will be available to do that for you.

Visa Clearance Fee

You’ll also need to pay the Visa Clearance fee during the application process. The amount shown on the official portal should always be your reference, since the price can change, but I paid 21,661.25 naira (including fees).

The requirements are different for some other categories, such as students, official travel, conferences, and diaspora applications, so make sure you choose the correct category on the portal before uploading your documents.

Who Can Be Your NDLEA Guarantor?

Good guarantor options can include:

  • A church member
  • A family friend
  • An employer or senior colleague
  • A business owner
  • A professional such as a lawyer, doctor, accountant, or civil servant
  • Another responsible adult who knows you personally and is willing to stand as your guarantor

I used a church member and a senior mentor as my guarantors, and that worked for me. Some or most people used their friends.

The important thing is to choose people who are genuinely willing to help and can provide the required documents when you need them. It is better to sort this out early, because waiting for guarantor documents can easily slow down your application.

Also, the commitment letter the guarantor has to sign has some heavy words, so try to explain it well to your guarantors so they can know what they are getting into before asking for their details, in case they are not comfortable standing for you.

Lastly, if your guarantor is a business owner or entrepreneur, they need to provide their CAC document, status report, and MEMAT, but if they are employees or professionals, they will provide a work ID card if they have one, employment contracts and/or professional certificates.

Your guarantor must also sign physically with a pen, not digitally.

What If You Are Self-Sponsored?

If you are paying for the trip yourself, you can still apply without using a separate sponsor.

In that case, you should be ready to provide your own financial and employment or business documents as proof that you can fund the trip yourself.

This can include things like:

  • Your bank statement
  • Employment letter or work ID
  • Business registration documents, if self-employed
  • Tax documents, where applicable
  • Any other document that helps show your source of funds

The important thing is that your documents clearly support the fact that you are financing the trip yourself.

In the sponsor section, add yourself as the sponsor, and reupload your personal documents like identification documents (NIN/International passport) and ID number, even if it says optional and you have uploaded the documents before in the personal section; still upload.

How to Apply for NDLEA Visa Clearance Online

The application is done through the same NDLEA portal used for the Drug Integrity Test.

Step 1: Complete Your Drug Integrity Test

You need to complete the Drug Integrity Test before moving on to the Visa Clearance application.

If you have not done that yet, follow my guide on how to get an NDLEA Drug Integrity Test in Nigeria first.

Step 2: Log In to Your NDLEA Account

Go back to the NDLEA portal and log in with the account you already created.

From your dashboard, select the option to apply for Visa Clearance.

Step 3: Choose the Correct Application Category

Select the category that matches your reason for travel, such as tourism, study, official travel, or another available option.

Make sure you choose carefully because the documents required can differ depending on the category.

Step 4: Fill In Your Personal and Travel Details

Complete the application form with your personal information, passport details, travel information, sponsor details if applicable, and guarantor information.

Check everything properly before moving on, especially names, dates, passport numbers, and contact details.

Step 5: Upload Your Supporting Documents

Upload the documents required for your category, including your personal, sponsor, and guarantor documents.

Use clear scans and make sure every document is readable before submitting.

Step 6: Make the Required Payment

You will be prompted to pay the Visa Clearance fee during the application process.

Keep your payment confirmation after completing the transaction.

Step 7: Choose Your Appointment Location and Date

Select an available centre and appointment date from the options shown on the portal. You can choose the NDLEA office on Ikoyi Shaw Road for Lagos residents.

In my case, I chose State Command.

Address: 4 Shaw Road, Onilegbale Rd, Ikoyi, Lagos

Available appointment dates should appear based on the centre and state you choose.

Step 8: Download and Print Your Application Summary

Once the application is submitted, download your application summary and print a copy for your appointment.

What to Take to Your NDLEA Visa Clearance Appointment

On the day of your appointment, go with the original versions and printed copies of the documents you submitted online, especially the ones NDLEA may want to verify physically.

I recommend taking:

  • Your printed Visa Clearance application summary containing your appointment confirmation
  • Your international passport
  • Your NIN slip
  • Your Drug Integrity Test result
  • Your state of origin certificate
  • Your signed application letter
  • Your sponsor documents, if applicable
  • Your guarantor commitment letters and documents
  • Your bank statement (a commercial bank is preferred; you can use a microfinance bank such as Kuda or Opay, etc., as a backup but not the main statement).
  • Any other important documents you already uploaded to the NDLEA dashboard.

It is better to carry more than you think you will need than to get there and realise one important document is missing.

What Happens at the NDLEA Visa Clearance Appointment?

First, expect to be delayed. If you are in a rush or impatient, you will either leave angrily like many people did when I was there, or you will end up lashing out at someone.

Hopefully it gets better when you visit.

Also, expect a lot of back and forth; I visited 3 times before I finally got my clearance. The first time was for a drug test; the remaining two were for the visa clearance.

The first time I went for the visa clearance, my guarantors didn’t physically sign the commitment letters, so I had to go back home. I also saw people with different situations; it was hectic.

I was also sent back to reupload some of my documents that I had snapped and uploaded. I was told they weren’t well cropped and visible.

The officers will check the documents you submitted and confirm that the information in your application matches what you brought with you.

This is also where any missing, unclear, or inconsistent documents can become a problem, so make sure your originals and copies are properly arranged before you go.

You will be asked questions about your trip, sponsor, guarantors, or the documents you submitted, depending on your application. There is like a mini interview. I was asked about my work, and I just told the man to Google Sarah Olaleye, and my profile said it all.

Your guarantors do not usually need to attend the appointment with you, but their documents must be complete and valid.

Once everything is accepted, your picture and fingerprint will be taken, and you will be led to another room for an interview.

If all things check out, expect to get your visa clearance certificate within 6 – 48 hours.

How Do You Get the NDLEA Visa Clearance Certificate?

Once your Visa Clearance application has been approved, the certificate should be made available through your NDLEA account.

You should be able to:

  • View the clearance from your dashboard
  • Download the certificate
  • Save a digital copy
  • Print it if you need a physical copy for your visa application

Before using it, check that your name, passport details, issue date, validity period, and any other personal information are correct.

If anything looks wrong, it is better to contact NDLEA before submitting the certificate with your visa application.

I would also keep both the PDF and a printed copy somewhere safe, especially if you may need to refer to the clearance again during your visa process.

Common Problems That Can Delay NDLEA Visa Clearance

A few small issues can slow the process down, so it helps to check everything properly before submitting.

Common problems include:

  • Incomplete guarantor documents
  • Names or personal details that do not match across documents
  • Missing state of origin certificate
  • Blurry or poorly scanned uploads
  • Unclear sponsor information
  • Choosing the wrong application category
  • Starting the process too close to your visa application date

Most of these are avoidable if you prepare your documents first and review everything carefully before submitting the application.

What Comes After NDLEA Visa Clearance?

Once your NDLEA Visa Clearance is ready, you can move on to the visa application itself.

If you followed my earlier advice and applied for your Police Clearance Certificate around the same time as your Drug Integrity Test, it should also be ready by now or close to ready. That means you can gather both clearances with your other supporting documents and move into the final visa application stage.

For Thailand, this is where you start putting the full application together: your NDLEA Visa Clearance, Police Clearance Certificate, passport, financial documents, flight and hotel reservations, and the other documents required for your visa category.

I’ll cover that next in my full guide on how to apply for a Thailand visa from Nigeria.

If your Police Clearance Certificate is still outstanding, you can also follow my separate guide on how to get a Police Clearance Certificate in Nigeria.

I can help you handle the NDLEA Visa Clearance process from start to finish.

Frequently Asked Questions About NDLEA Visa Clearance

Can I use the same NDLEA Visa Clearance for more than one visa application?

No. NDLEA Visa Clearance is usually issued for the specific country you are travelling to, so you cannot simply reuse the same clearance for a different destination.

If you later apply for a visa to another country that also requires NDLEA clearance, you will need to submit a new Visa Clearance application for that country.

What Is “Evidence of Engagement” on the NDLEA Visa Clearance Application?

“Evidence of engagement” is meant to show what you are travelling for or that you have a genuine reason connected to the trip.

If the field is optional, you can leave it blank.

If you want to upload something, you can use documents such as your flight reservation and hotel booking, which is what I used for my own application.

For other travel purposes, it could also be something that supports the reason for your trip, such as a school admission letter, conference invitation, or employment-related document.

How long is NDLEA Visa Clearance valid?

The validity period is not clearly stated on the general NDLEA Visa Clearance page, so check the date shown on your own certificate and confirm with the embassy or visa authority if needed. But I’ve heard it’s about 3 months or 1 year.

Can I apply for NDLEA Visa Clearance from outside Nigeria?

Yes. NDLEA has a separate process for Nigerians in the diaspora, although the requirements are slightly different from those applying from within Nigeria.

What happens if NDLEA asks me for additional documents?

Get the requested documents as quickly as possible. Missing or unclear documents will delay the clearance process.

What happens if my NDLEA Visa Clearance application is rejected or not approved?

Contact NDLEA to find out the reason and whether you need to correct a document, provide additional information, or submit a new application.

Can I change my NDLEA Visa Clearance appointment date after booking?

Yes, you can change it through your dashboard. Go to Location and appointment date to reschedule.

Can I use a previous Drug Integrity Test result for a new Visa Clearance application?

The NDLEA Drug Integrity Test result is valid for one year. If it’s still valid, you can use it.

Do I need both NDLEA Visa Clearance and Police Clearance for Thailand?

Yes, you need both for a tourist visa. They are separate documents, and one does not replace the other.

Can someone help me complete the NDLEA Visa Clearance application?

Yes. I can help you with the registration, document preparation, uploads, and guide you through the application process from start to finish.

Send me a message to get started. However, note that you will appear physically at the office for your biometrics, submission, and interview.

Final Thoughts

NDLEA Visa Clearance can look intimidating at first, especially because of the documents, guarantors, and extra checks involved. But once you break the process into stages and prepare everything early, it becomes much easier to handle.

If you’re applying for Thailand, your next step is to put the clearance together with your Police Clearance Certificate and the rest of your visa documents.
