A Police Clearance Certificate is one of those visa documents people often hear about only after they are already deep into the application process.

I applied for mine while sorting out my NDLEA documents, right after applying for the Drug Integrity Test, and I did my biometrics on the same day I went for the test.

If you want the process to move faster, I’d recommend doing something similar, because by the time I was working on my NDLEA Visa Clearance, my Police Clearance Certificate was ready.

That said, I did experience a delay, and I know some people are currently dealing with the same issue. I’ll explain what happened, what caused the delay in my case, and what you can do if you run into a similar problem.

In this guide, I’ll show you how the Police Clearance Certificate process works in Nigeria, what you need before applying, what happens during the fingerprint stage, how long it takes, and how to avoid the small mistakes that can slow things down.

What Is a Police Clearance Certificate?

A Police Clearance Certificate, sometimes called a Police Character Certificate, is an official document issued by the Nigeria Police Force to show whether you have a criminal record in Nigeria.

You may be asked to provide one for certain visa applications, especially for work, study, residency, immigration, or other long-stay purposes. Some visit visa applications may also request it depending on the country.

It is different from NDLEA Visa Clearance. Police clearance deals with criminal records, while NDLEA clearance is related to the drug-screening and visa-clearance process.

What You Need Before Applying for a Police Clearance Certificate

For the application, have these ready:

  • Your international passport
  • NIN
  • BVN
  • Passport photograph
  • Active email address
  • A reachable phone number because they mostly send important messages via sms
  • Payment method
  • You will also fill out a form asking basic questions about why you need the clearance
  • You will also be asked if you have been convicted before; answer truthfully
  • Access to a fingerprint/biometric centre when prompted

I’d also make sure the name you use matches your passport exactly. Small differences across your passport, NIN, or application details can create unnecessary problems later.

Quick Funny Story

I need to share this here because I find it hilarious.

When I applied for my Police Clearance Certificate, My husband and I were vacationing in Togo so I used my mum’s phone number because my nigerian number won’t be reachable in Togo.

I didn’t know the number would be important (Thank God, I used her number though), so I didn’t even inform her to expect a message or anything.

Then, my mum got a message that I was needed at the police criminal investigation department, WITH MY FULL GOVERNMENT NAME MEHNNN. OMG.

She called me immediatly on whatsapp panicking and asking what happened and why was the police looking for me, I laughed and explained and it was the funniest thing ever.

When you’re applying, ensure to learn from my mistake, lol.

How Much Does a Police Clearance Certificate Cost in Nigeria?

The official fee for a Police Character Certificate through the Nigeria Police POSSAP portal is currently ₦30,000. That was the amount I paid online.

I will advise you to also pay online. If you go to the police station to get it done, the officers there will charge you ₦60,000 or more, so do it online yourself and go to the station only for biometrics.

Ps: Beware of scammers during these processes. If it’s not from the official Possap line. Do not respond to anyone.

Be wary of people who contact you via social media platforms or WhatsApp claiming to be from the police force especially if it’s not their official name.

One of such people tried to contact me. Thank God I was alert.

And don’t pay anybody money online except via the official dashboard.

Travel agents/advisors can help you with information or to fill your application but if anyone promises to give you a certificate after payment without you doing anything or appearing at the police station physically for biometrics, they are scammers.

Beware!

That said, if you need help with any of the procedures like Police clearance, NDLEA drug integrity test, and visa clearance, reach out to me and I will guide you.

How to Apply for a Police Clearance Certificate in Nigeria

Visit the official POSSAP portal, which is the Nigeria Police platform for services such as Police Character Certificates.

Step 1: Create a POSSAP Account

Go to the POSSAP website and create an individual account.

You’ll be asked to choose your identity type, such as your NIN.

Step 2: Select Police Character Certificate

Once you’re logged in, choose Police Character Certificate from the available services and start a new request.

Step 3: Fill In Your Application Details

Complete the form with your personal information and the reason you need the certificate.

You’ll also need to enter the destination country, so make sure the details match the visa application you’re preparing for.

Step 4: Upload Your Documents

Upload the documents requested on the portal (which include your bio data or identification documents) and check that all scans are clear and readable before submitting.

Step 5: Pay the ₦30,000 Fee

Pay the Police Character Certificate processing fee through POSSAP and keep your payment confirmation.

The portal currently shows a ₦30,000 processing fee for Police Character Certificate applications.

Select Panti Yaba for your biometrics capture if you are in Lagos.

Step 6: Complete Your Fingerprint Capture

After the online application, you will receive a text message to come for your fingerprint capture.

The Police Character Certificate process uses a full fingerprint form for both hands, so this is not something you can do online. You need to appear physically.

In my case, I did my biometrics on the same day I went for my NDLEA Drug Integrity Test, which saved me time and allowed both applications to move together.

Step 7: Track Your Application

After your fingerprints have been captured, keep checking your POSSAP account for updates.

This is the stage where delays can happen, so if your application stays pending longer than expected, don’t just leave it indefinitely. I’ll explain what happened with mine and what you can do if you run into the same issue later in this guide.

Step 8: Download Your Certificate

Once approved, your Police Character Certificate can be issued electronically and verified through POSSAP using its approval number.

My Police certificate. Private information covered.

Check your name, destination country, issue date, and expiry date before using it for your visa application.

How Long Does It Take to Get a Police Clearance Certificate?

You can go for your biometrics when you get the sms to come [which is almost immediately] (after your payment).

The Nigeria Police Force currently states that a Police Character Certificate takes about 5–7 working days after your biometrics.

What to Do If Your Police Clearance Is Taking Too Long

If your Police Clearance Certificate goes beyond the expected processing time, don’t just leave the application sitting there.

Start by checking your POSSAP dashboard to make sure your application, payment, and biometric capture have all been recorded properly.

If everything looks complete but the status is not moving, contact POSSAP support and include your application or request number so they can trace it. POSSAP currently lists info@possap.gov.ng and 02018884040 as its official support contacts.

In my case, I had completed the biometrics and got a text message that it was successful, but I suddenly saw a new reference number in my dashboard and my application showed pending for many days.

I got really worried so I started messaging them everywhere. I followed them on instagram and sent them a dm, I also commented on their page, no reply for a long time. I called and nobody picked, so I sent an email to secretariat@possap.gov.ng.

I also called one of the officers I met during biometrics and she said the issue was no longer in their hands and I’d just have to wait.

Someone at the NDLEA center said they had been having network issues that’s why there has been a delay.

The next day my comment was replied to, and I asked them to check their dm. But before they could reply their dm, I already got an email showing a copy of my Police clearance certificate. I was so excited.

Here is the email I sent them –

Hello I made an application September 25, 2026. I also did my biometrics September 28, 2026.

I received this message – Dear (full name), your POLICE CHARACTER CERTIFICATE request with File Number PCC********** has been approved.

It’s been approved, but I can’t see where to download my information on the website. I’m so confused because I’ve done everything and there has been no response.
–

In case your case is not the same with mine, just send them your file number and state your case and you will have it sorted. Hopefully.

Frequently Asked Questions About Police Clearance Certificates in Nigeria

Can I use one Police Clearance Certificate for more than one visa application?

Since the certificate includes the destination country and purpose, I would not reuse one automatically for a different country.

How long is a Nigerian Police Clearance Certificate valid?

Police Character Certificates issued through POSSAP are typically valid for three months. The issue and expiry dates are shown on the certificate.

Can I apply for Police Clearance from outside Nigeria?

Yes. You can start the application from outside Nigeria. If you are not in the diaspora, then you have to come to Lagos for your biometrics.

What if my name on my NIN is different from my passport?

It is best to correct the mismatch before applying. Your identity details should match across your NIN, passport, and Police Clearance application to avoid delays or problems later.

What if there is a mistake on my Police Clearance Certificate?

Contact POSSAP and request a correction before using the certificate for your visa application.

Can someone else apply for Police Clearance on my behalf?

Someone can help you complete the online application, but you will still need to provide your own personal details and complete the required fingerprint or biometric capture yourself.

Do I need a new Police Clearance Certificate for every country?

Usually, yes. The certificate includes the destination country and purpose, so it is safer to apply for a new one when applying to a different country.

Can I use an old Police Clearance Certificate if it is still valid?

Possibly, if it is still within its validity period and was issued for the same destination and purpose. You should still confirm that the visa authority accepts it.

Do I need both Police Clearance and NDLEA Visa Clearance for Thailand?

Yes, you do. They are separate documents, and one does not replace the other.

Final Thoughts

The main thing with Police Clearance is not to treat it like a last-minute visa document. The process itself is manageable, but delays can happen for reasons that are not always obvious from the portal.

So once you submit, keep an eye on the status, follow up if it stalls, and make sure the final certificate matches the country and purpose you need it for.

That small bit of planning can save you from getting to the final stage of your visa application with one document still holding everything up.
